| Name: | Susan Sto Helit |
|---|
Character: Susan Sto Helit
Series: Discworld
Version: shortly after the events of Thief of Time
Age: approximately 21
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Straight
Appearance: Like so many other things about her, Susan's appearance is only mostly normal. Admittedly, her taste in clothes is perfectly normal, if tending towards black and the severe side of the spectrum. The rest is not quite so normal, and the most noticeable of these is her hair, which is so blonde it's nearly white, save for a single black streak. In its default state, it rises from from her head as if she'd just received a massive electric shock; of late she's taken to putting it up in a rather severe bun.
She also has something of a tendency to look older that she really is.
Personality: In a word, Susan is sensible. Unfortunately, not the same sort of sensible that manages to keep a person out of danger. Instead it's the sort of sensible that keeps someone out of any more danger. She's also more than a little determined, and when there are things that need to be done, she is willing do whatever needs doing to make sure they're done well. Admittedly, this sometimes means having to figure out what it is that needs to be done, but Susan is more than willing to get to the bottom of as many things as is necessary to find that out.
And then there's the fact that she's only mostly mortal. While this doesn't change her outlook on life, it comes as something of an annoyance to her when she's called upon to make use of that fact as she'd much prefer to lead an ordinary life.
Abilities/Weaponry/Strengths: As Death's granddaughter, there are certain abilities that have been passed down to Susan, both of the static and non-static sort. The one she is most frequently is simply referred as 'the voice' – with a bit of effort she can turn her voice into voice much like Death's, and thus rather hard to disobey. This is usually marked by her speaking IN ALL CAPS like Death himself does. In addition to this, she can also walk through such things as walls and doors and is quite capable of existing outside of time*. Finally she can see the things that are really there; the things that people don't normally see, such as anthropomorphic personifications or ghosts. Needless to say, illusions won't work very well on her.
On a more physical level, she is also capable of wielding both sword and scythe, as well as a poker.
*ie, if someone stops time, she isn't stopped and she can step out of time for a bit. The only drawback is that while she's outside of time she can only interact without people who can exist outside of time. And she can't walk through walls if she's outside of time
Weaknesses: While she might have a rather impressive set of inherited abilities, at the end of the day Susan is still very much a mortal. She bleeds, she can be hurt, and eventually she will die. And while she is okay with being a part of the supernatural world, she largely prefers to live an ordinary life; only stepping into her grandfather's world when it is absolutely necessary to do so. She is also fonder of chocolate than she would like to admit (though it's not that she's addicted to it or anything - she just has high standards for herself.)
History: Susan was born to Ysabell and Mort, the Duke and and Duchess of Sto Helit. They also happened to Death's (adopted) daughter and Death's apprentice, respectively. Consequently, her early years were rather interesting; divided between the real world and visits to Death's domain. It was probably for that very reason that her parents brought her up to be sensible from a very early age. The end result of this was that the young Susan simply refused believe that the supernatural side of the world existed.
And so things remain for a while. At least, until Susan parents die in a tragic carriage accident. Which wouldn't be such a problem except for the fact that Death chooses just that moment to go on a holiday. And in his absence, the mantle of Death falls to the one person who'd much prefer to not have to deal with that – a 16-year-old Susan. Unfortunately for her, things aren't quite so simple even then as she quickly finds herself in the middle of the Discworld's developing rock scene, which turns out to have rather interesting results when she saves Imp y Celyn from dying when he should have. In the end, it takes Death himself to put things to rights, and Susan goes back to her (nearly-)normal life, finishing her schooling and taking up a job as governess in Ankh-Morpork.
Unfortunately for her, the other half of her life isn't done making demands on her life, as scarcely a year later she finds herself pulled into the problems of grandfather's world once again – and on Hogswatch*, no less. Namely, the Hogfather has gone missing (presumed dead, or as dead as an anthropomorphic incarnation can get) and without there being belief in him, the sun won't rise. The Discworld takes belief seriously, you see. The first that Susan hears of this however is when Death arrives on her doorstep – or rather, her chimney, as he's taken up the mantle of the Hogfather, presumably in an effort to do what he can to keep things running. The rest is up to Susan, as it takes place in the one place where there is no death and thus the only place that Death can't go – the domain of the Tooth Fairy. As it turns out, the Auditors of Reality have hired an Assassin to kill the Hogfather. And the way he's doing the deed is by using sympathetic magic and the teeth collected by the Tooth Fairy to force the children of the world to not believe in the Hogfather. However, in the end, Susan manages to undo the damage dealt, even though it involves facing down the Auditors themselves.
Of course, even that isn't the end of the demands her grandfather's world make on her, nor is it the last we hear of the Auditors. However, there is at the very least a decent span of time separating the two events as four years pass before we next encounter Susan. In the meantime, she's moved on from her position as governess and instead has taken up teaching.
Interestingly, it's not for her nature as Death's granddaughter that Susan is called upon this time. Rather it's her mostly mortal nature. You see, Time had a son – a son who, like Susan, is mostly mortal and who will need to learn about his unusual lineage, and soon. The reason for this? The Auditors once again – having been thwarted in their plans to destroy the Hogfather, they've set their eyes on time itself, asking a bright young clockmaker to make the perfect clock. Which wouldn't be such a problem if not for the fact that once the perfect clock is put into motion, time itself stops. And with time stopped the only ones who can fix the problem are those who can can exist outside of time; Susan, and Time's son. Which makes for a rather odd predicament, but in the end the clock is destroyed and time regains its normal flow.
And at some point after that, she finds herself rather abruptly pulled away from her normal life once again, this time to Paixao.
